If you fancy something very different to ease you through the lockdown, you may want to check out a quirky and odd EP from Canadian funk/jazz octet BUSTY AND THE BASS. The outfit hail from Montreal and last year they turned a few heads (and ears) with their ‘Baggy Eyed Dopeman’ – a tune as bonkers and captivating as the title suggests!
Now they continue their odd and envelope pushing music trajectory with ‘ET Suite’ – a five track EP (the last track is a segued mix of the first four cuts by the way). The sound is difficult to describe… maybe combining West Coast harmonies with Tower of Power brass, big booming bass lines, off the wall sections, free form jazz, a flavour of Outkast and a garnish of George Clinton. (Clinton actually featured on their ‘Baggy Eyed Dopeman’: don’t know if he’s involved here).
The band tell us that they’re developing a computer game to go with the EP. They say you’ll need to guide a UFO around space to find band members and once you’ve found them all they will play the EP to you on the moon. Sounds fantastic! That’s to come. In the meantime, ‘ET Suite’ will be released on March 17th. They say it’s “Out of this World”. We can vouch for that!
