Akie Bermiss is a Brooklyn-based soul man who learned his trade in the church. His first forays into secular music were with bands/collectives like Aabaraki, the Screaming Headless Torsos, Miri Ben-Ari (the Hip Hop Violinist) and rapper, Soul Khan. Akie then broke free to form his own trio and released his début EP in 2014.
Mr B is now busy promoting a new EP from which the lead track ‘(K)nowhere’ is winning lots of plays, praise and plaudits. It’s an unusual and interesting tune that somebody described as “a cross between Donny Hathaway and Tom Waits….” an odd description, but you can hear where they’re coming from. The Baird College music graduate, bourbon swigging, cigar smoking, children’s author (Mr Bermiss’ description of himself!) certainly offers something different.
