79.5 is a New York based band founded in 2010 by Kate Mattison. Right now they consist of Kate, singer and rapper Lola Adanna, drummer Caito Sanchez, bassist Andrew Raposo and sax player flautist Izaak Mills. They’re named after an imaginary radio station, “79.5” – “the sound of New York City”, so their music reflects the kaleidoscope of sounds that emanate from the Big Apple – psychedelia, sweet pop, rock, underground disco and a lot more – including vintage soul.
Right now the band are preparing the release of an eponymous album, due early May via Razor-N-Tape. The lead single, ‘Our Hearts Don’t Go That Way’ has just won release and it’s a soulful stunner – a pacey duet between Ms Maddison and the wonderful Durand Jones who was brought in after 79.5 toured with him and his Indications.
The song is all about the simple fact that true love will endure but it’s the energy packed sound that grabs the attention with the two very different voices (like all great soul duets) creating something magical. Add a honking 80s sax solo and you have one great cut. My only criticism is that it’s far too short – clocking in at just over 2 minutes. ‘Our Hearts Don’t Go That Way’ – recommended!
