Rhino is just about to release two box sets chronicling the careers of the King and Queen of Soul, OTIS REDDING and ARETHA FRANKLIN.
‘The Queen Of Soul‘ is a profile of ARETHA’S Atlantic years and comprises four CDs in ‘fatpack’ cases. It contains 86 chronologically-sequenced tracks spanning the years 1967-1976 and includes her biggest hits as well as album favourites, live tracks and a clutch of studio outtakes.
‘The King Of Soul‘ focuses on the music of OTIS REDDING – it, too, like the Aretha set, is a 4-CD pack and features 92 songs sequenced in the order of their original release dates. Though Redding tragically died in a plane crash in 1967 aged twenty-six, he continued to enjoy posthumous chart entries in the US up until 1969 and which is documented by the tracks selected for the box set. The set contains a blend of studio and live tracks – and all of his signature songs – plus several duets with Carla Thomas.
Both sets are released on February 3rd and retail at about £15.00. A bargain, we think!
Look out for reviews soon at SJF.
