KYLIE AULDIST – the voice on Kungs’ hit remix version of Cookin’ On Three Burners’ ‘This Girl’ – has long been acknowledged as Australia’s premier female soul vocalist.
Put that claim to the test by grabbing a listen to the lovely lady’s brand new five track EP, ‘Waste Of Time’. The mini album has been produced by Ms A’s long time collaborators Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos/Lanu/CO3B/Black Feeling) and Graeme Pogson (of Aussie electronic duo GL) and leaked copies reveal a set of uplifting, Summer vibes that evoke the sound and feel of late 70’s and early 80’s club classics. There’s a whiff of electro about affairs too; that might just remind you of club classics from people like D Train, Sharon Redd and even dear old Chaka Khan.
Immediate attention grabber is the set’s title track. ‘Waste Of Time’ is a lovely mid-tempo roller that’s similar in places to the original ‘This Girl’ though it also reminded me of Swing Out Sister. If you like SOS and/or ‘This Girl’, you’ll love this! Lead cut, though, is the more direct, driving ‘Sensational’. Aimed straight at the dance floor, this swirling soul cocktail is mixed from all the key ingredients of those classic 80s weekender tunes!
‘Family Tree’ offers more of the same, ‘Rewards’ is chunky in the manner of Chic while ‘Good Time Girl’ rides a proper loping bass line and despite some rapping from King Merc, the soul congregation will love it. His rhymes are more Sugarhill Gang than Wu Tang Clan!
