NIVA is a new soul singer from Houston, Texas and she’s set her stall out right from the start by branding herself “NIVA, THE SOUL DIVA” and her latest single lives up to that ambitious billing. The song she’s currently promoting, you see, is a tortured ballad called ‘NUMB’ (the capitals are hers, by the way) and its subject matter is a far cry from usual contemporary R&B themes.
Niva’s song deals with the controversial topic of domestic violence… bullying, verbal abuse and emotional blackmail. Stern stuff indeed, however when we learn that one of Niva’s biggest influences was the great Linda Jones, you can see where she’s coming from. The tune is properly sombre with an intense passion that belies Niva’s age.
