MYLES SANKO is an acclaimed singer/songwriter who we first came across in 2013 via his ‘Born In Black And White’ EP. That was quickly followed by his ‘Forever Dreaming’ album, which like the EP channelled a retro soul sound. Since then three more albums (including a live one with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra) have seen Mr S mature to offer a more contemporary soul sound with jazzy undertones.
Hear that new(ish) sound in full flow on the man’s brand new album, ‘Let It Unfold’. The 12 tracker is a new departure for the now French based singer. You see for the first time he’s decided to take full creative charge over every element of the project—from writing, composing, arranging, recording, mixing and producing to distribution through his own label, 213 Music.
The album’s release was prefaced by the single ‘Won’t Be Lonely’ – a gentle but insistent contemporary soul groove and the LP offers plenty more of this smooth sophistication like the really lovely ‘I Feel The Same’ which features some real old school spoken passages, the Marvin Gaye-flecked ‘Stronger’, the jaunty ‘Let It Go’ and the sweet, sincere ‘No More Running’. The percussive ‘Say It’ is jazzier while the opener ‘Unfold’ sets the tone beautifully with a lengthy muted horn intro.
There’s more sweet muted horn on the ballad ‘More Than This’ which vies with the chilled out ‘Peace Of Mind’ as the LP’s best slow passage.
