MUSICAL MONOLOGUE….

alt

‘Monologue’ is the latest long player from new age soul man AARON ABERNATHY.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Aaron, like Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack, is a Howard University graduate and his CV includes work with people like Slum Village and Eric Roberson. With credentials like that you can safely assume that ‘Monologue’ is an ambitious album…. clearly not your run of the mill soul set!

Flavours include the Prince style ‘I Need To Know’ and the Parliament-tinged ‘Son Of Larry’. But Mr A is no copyist. Even the briefest listen to the 11 tracker will convince you that he’s a soul one off. If pushed to draw a comparison I’d suggest he’s a blend of Macy Gray and Maxwell! Hear that bizarre cocktail at its best on ‘I Need To Know’… all swirling strings and some tight beats, topped with the man’s idiosyncratic vocal.

‘Monologue’ offers soul surprises around every corner… as on the title cut, the argument led ‘Kiss Me Again’ and the sweet ‘Ab Is Gone’ where the harmonies are more Beach Boys than Blind Boys.
