European boutique label SOUL4REAL began a new venture last month with two quite stunning four track EPs of vintage, classic, Motown music – tunes that had never been released on vinyl before!.
Both discs sold out in an instant and the team at Soul4Real were so pleased that they’re lining up two more Motown EPs for imminent release – ‘From Detroit With Love’ – volumes III and IV!
The four track on Volume III are – KIM WESTON – ‘AFTER THE RAIN’, FOUR TOPS – ‘JUST A LITTLE LOVE (BEFORE MY LIFE IS GONE)’, CAROLYN CRAWFORD – ‘THINK OF THE TIMES’ and THE VANDELLAS – ‘YOU TAUGHT ME HOW TO CARE’.
The cuts on Volume 4 are KIM WESTON – ‘ABSENT MINDED LOVER’, OMA HEARD – ‘DADDY COOL’, MARVIN GAYE – ‘JUST A LITTLE LOVE (BEFORE MY LIFE IS GONE)’, and CHUCK JACKSON & YVONNE FAIR – ‘IT MUST BE LOVE BABY’.
Most of the recordings date from the early/mid 60s – the era so beloved of serious Motown collectors. Kim Weston’s ‘Absent Minded Lover’ perfectly sums up just what was so magical about Motown music during that period… irresistible. Interesting too to have two versions of the Mickey Stevenson/Ivy Jo Hunter produced ‘Just A Little Love’. Make up your own mind which is the better version – the Tops’ or Marvin’s.
Several of these remarkable cuts have been released digitally or on various compilations and anthologies, but now we can all enjoy them how they were meant to be heard – on vinyl! Beware though!
