Those of you following our recent pieces on Japanese soul label, Sweet Soul Records, will be intrigued by a new five tracker from the label that’s currently trying (successfully we’re told) to rebuild Japanese interest in soul.
The five tracker (they were called EPs back in the day!) is called ‘Love, Soul Lights’ and follows the pattern of the label’s ‘Soul Over The Race’ series. That’s to say, the songs are reasonably well known soul tunes given a makeover by some of Japan’s best session payers and new soul vocalists.
Included on this set are great versions of PATTI LABELLE’S ‘Love, Need And Want You’ and AL WILSON’S perennial fave, ‘Show And Tell’. The names of the new artists will mean little, but let’s say they all do a fine job and give new perspectives to friendly, familiar sounds.
