Earlier in February, with Valentines Day very much in the air, we enthused about a dramatic ballad called ‘I Do Love You’ from an enigmatic “new” vocalist who goes by the name BLACK GIRL SINGER. The PR that came with the release was deliberately vague. It said that the “singer” was a New Yorker, now based in Florida who’s worked with people like Kelly Price, Michael Bolton, Angela Dunlap, Kool & The Gang, Rick James, Angie Stone, Spyro Gyro, Robin Givens, Sheila E, and Isaac Hayes to name a few. So we can’t really describe her as “new”… and her old school voice underlined that too! Her collaborator on the song was an equally enigmatic “DJ GWEST” but between them they crafted a slinky, bass-heavy slow jam.
If you missed it on initial release, then a collaboration between DSG promotions and Izipho Soul is giving you the opportunity to acquaint yourself with this stirring ballad via an imminent release. The disc’s B side is an equally dramatic ‘Heart Of Hearts’ which is properly old school, grown up soul. And the good news is that for the release “Black Girl Singer” has chosen to unmask herself! She’s veteran vocalist Lillie Nicole McCloud (below) who has a slew of albums to her name. She was also the “Nicole” on Timmy Thomas’ 1986 evergreen ‘New York Eyes’. She also wowed the judges and the audiences on the 2013 season of American X Factor. She was eventually mentored by Kelly Rowlands and reached the last 8!
You can hear just why on the powerful, real soul pairing of ‘I Do Love You’ and ‘Heart Of Hearts’ when it hits the sales racks – no release date just yet… “possibly May”. Well worth waiting for though.
