MOODY WOMAN!

We first  got to know American, in-demand bassist, NIK WEST  via her 2017 album, ‘Say Somethin” – a mix of Prince-flavoured funk  and guitar-led  rock. More recently Ms  W teamed up with legendary bassist Larry Graham for a funky single, ‘Thumpahlenah’ – the title being the nickname that Larry conferred on his protégé because of the way she thumps the bass!

Since then there’s been a couple more Nik West singles – ‘Cotton Candy’ and ‘Boom Baby Boom’ – both, like  the aforementioned ‘Thumpahlenah’ taken from an “upcoming” long player. Well, they’re taking the wraps off that album right now and ‘Moody’ will be good to go on September 8th.

Sneak previews reveal that the 12 tracker is very similar to the lady’s previous work; that’s to say, it’s a mix of Prince-fuelled funk (typified by the single ‘Cotton Candy’ ) and “guitar hero” style rock (typified by ‘We Can Do It’). In  between there’s plenty of funky, heavy bass numbers like ‘Funk For The People’ and a little intrigue like the almost acoustic ‘Bottom Of The Bottle’. Then, there’s the all hands to the pump, blistering ‘We Can Do It’. This is a female empowerment anthem   that throws everything at you and features guests Cindy Blackman-Santana and Larissa Basillo. Like most of  the album it’s genre defying and if that’s your boat floater you may want to investigate!
