Last year Rochester’s ROBIN MCKELLE won the hearts of the soul community with her wonderful ‘Soul Flower’ album. Since then the one-time jazz chanteuse has been touring hard yet she still found the time to work on a brand new LP. For the new recording Robin and her band, the Flytones, decamped to soul’s spiritual home, Memphis, to immerse themselves in the sounds of Stax, Hi, Al Green, Ann Pebbles, Willie Mitchell et al.
The album, ‘Heart Of Memphis’ is just out and it’s a blistering collection of old school Southern soul. Most of the songs are originals but listen up for a remarkable version of Nina Simone’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’. Watch out for a full review of the album here @ SJF very soon.
In the meantime Robin will be performing at Ronnie Scott’s Soho club at the end of February as part of a Fred Wesley/Pee Wee Ellis show. More details from the venue.
