Elusive and enigmatic soul man MAXWELL has just released a new single and, surprisingly maybe, it’s a cover – a cover of Al Green’s lovely ‘Simply Beautiful’.
Fans of the Reverend will know that the song first appeared on his 1972 LP, ‘I’m Still In Love With You’. It’s been covered several times – notably from our perspective by Leela James, Queen Latifah and Jose James.
‘Simply Beautiful’ is a deep and emotive song and clearly a Maxwell favourite. In 2008 he performed it live as a tribute to Al at an awards ceremony while during his 2009 tour it was on the set list. This just released version is stark and simple – acoustic guitar and lush strings behind that wonderful voice.
