Some music sites are reporting the death on Tuesday 11th January of soul man MARVIN HOLMES, best known as front man with his groups The Uptights, Justice and The Funk Company
Holmes hailed from Oakland, California and began his career in the early 60s with the Uptights who peddled a tough, typically “Oakland” funk sound.
In the 70s Holmes founded his own Brown Door Records and with the group Justice he released a selection of collectable singles and albums. His ‘You Better Keep Her’ won some plays on the UK Northern soul scene. In the 80s he seemed to move towards the hip-hop scene working with rapper Too Short.
