Love is … what? An enigmatic question posed countless times and if you’re seeking some kind of explanation you may want to check out a powerful new single from TASHAN7 (yes, the current ID of the ‘Chasin’ A Dream’ Tashan). The song’s called ‘Love Is’ – but you probably guessed that!
Tashan7/Tashan is the musical alter ego of singer, musician, writer, producer, and recording artist, Thomas J. Pearse, who was brought up in the righteous Baptist gospel tradition. A graduate of Washington’s Howard University, he began his music career singing BVs for people like the Fat Boys and Whodini. Then came his time at Def Jam and that ‘Chasin’ A Dream’ album (1985). A plethora of acclaimed albums and singles followed and for a time he was a mainstay on the London soul scene. Indeed for UK soul purists, he’s a major player!
After a hiatus, his career resumed in 2017 with the album ‘Life Goes On’ at which stage he morphed into Tashan7. By 2017 though he was working as “T$MMY R$CK” , but for now he’s most definitely “Tashan7”.
Complicted? Yes… but it’s the music that counts and the man’s ‘Love Is’ is a lovely piece of work- gentle, insinuating and soulful and delivered in that unique, passionate voice. It’s part of Tashan7’s ‘Talkin’ To Myself’ project which has been inspired by his Gospel roots and indeed the hypnotic ‘Love Is’ is essentially a Gospel song, but like best of that genre it also has secular relevance.
