UK soul and jazz guitarist DAVE MASCALL has just released the 6th instalment in his ACID LOUNGE album series – a wonderful, 15 track showcase for his fretboard skills. And like previous ‘Acid Lounge’ iterations, this one mixes vocals with instrumentals and up-tempo workouts alongside more laid back items.
‘Acid Lounge 6’ is a mix of some of Dave singles from the past year or so (in various mixes) alongside plenty of new material. Mascall fans and listeners of the better soul and jazz stations will recognize things like ‘Gotta Trust In Love’, ‘Carnival Latino’, ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stand’, ‘Feel The Same’ and the very Soulutions-flavoured ‘Brighter Day’ which features lovely vocals from Miracle Thomas.
The album’s focus track – indeed the lead single – is ‘Memories Of Summer’. This one features the guest saxophone of Anita Carmichael who also joins Dave in some jazzy vocals Elsewhere there’s a touch of the George Bensons on things like ‘If I Could I Would’.
Helping Dave deliver, apart from the aforementioned Anita Carmichael and Miracle Thomas, there’s input from Lady Roxanne (vocals on ‘Hold On’), Hannah White (vocals on ‘Gotta Trust in Love’) and Dave’s regular singer, Julia Quinn who stars on 4 cuts. Amongst the guest musicians are Mike King (piano and strings), Steve Shone (bass), Neil Robinson (drums) and reed players John Sharpe, Paula Burtrell and Ian Thompson. Together they craft a slick and professional menu that sits sweetly on the cusp of contemporary UK soul and smooth jazz.
