Not heard too much from the Daptone label for a while, but the team are coming back big style in September with a new album from their long serving instrumental team THE BUDOS BAND. Formed in Staten Island in 2005, they originally described their unique sound as “70’s Psychedelic Instrumental Music with a touch of Afro-soul and Ethiopian music all with a soul undercurrent”.

Their new 11 track collection, ‘Long In The Tooth’ is the band’s 6th long player and like the previous five it’s hard to pigeon-hole (their own description, above, underlines that). Expect moody, shape shifting atmospherics driven by ponderous beats and spluttering brass stabs… a sort of European cinema noir soundtrack but just a little off kilter!

Their new PR describes it as “Link Wray and Ethiopian jazzer Mulatu Astatke collaborating on an Italian horror soundtrack”. See if they’re right when ‘Long In The Tooth’ becomes available in September via Daptone!
