Fancy something a little different to get you into 2016 and through the tribulations of a damp, cold Northern European winter? Yep… then maybe try a new album from Majorcan singer BUIKA called ‘Vivir Sin Meido’ (Live Without Fear).
The daughter of African parents, Buika was born in Palma De Majorca and her musical CV boasts work with Seal, Nelly Furtado, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and Nitin Sawhney. She’s released seven solo albums; the third ‘El Último Trago (The Last Drink)’ won her a Latin GRAMMY but in the mainstream Buika is probably best known for collaborating with acclaimed movie auteur Pedro Almódovar in his ‘La Piel Que Habito’ (The Skin I Live In). Buika peformed in the movie and created the soundtrack.
Buika’s new long player, ‘Vivir Sin Meido’ sees the striking singer performing in both Spanish and English and she says that the songs, “reflect the last decade of my life traversing the globe, with a sound that infuses elements of reggae, ragga, flamenco, R&B, Afrobeat, and gospel”.
Standout track is a dramatic ballad duet with Jason Mraz. ‘Carry Your Own Weight’ has been playlisted by radio and it’s easy to hear why, It’s insistent and soulful and the voices meld beautifully.
The album, ‘Vivir Sin Miedo’ is released on 5th February 2016 on EW Records and Buika plays live at Koko, London on Fri 16th Feb 2016.
