SOUL PRODIGY is Texan five piece soul band who gig in and around the San Antonio area. Between them, Robert Cockfield (keys), Jimmy Castillo (guitar), Gerald Ramcharam (bass), Eddie Norwood (drums) and charismatic singer, Edith Rivera cook up a great vintage soul sound… attested by the fact that their shows are regular sell-out affairs.
Their performances are a mix of originals songs and well-chosen covers and you can enjoy the flavour of what they offer via the band’s debut EP, ‘Let Your Soul Speak’. The mini-album opens with a lazy, laid back and jazzy number called ‘So, Soul Prodigy’. The song expresses what the band feel they are all about…. “Blending music with a jazzy and funky groove to speak to your inner spirit and to warm to your soul and your soles!”
Amongst the covers is a cool version of Marvin’s ‘What’s Going On’. Yep, it has been covered hundreds of times, but in my book there can’t be too many versions of this wonderful song. Soul Prodigy’s version is lazy, light and understated. There’s also a great version of the pop standard ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ into which Ms Rivera quietly works in some of her own, original thoughts.
