RAMROCK RETRO is brand new soul label (an imprint of the ever-reliable Ramrock, of course!) and it kicks off with a wonderful double A sided single on GLADYS KNIGHT and the PIPS. The 7” pairs ‘Stop And Get A Hold Of Myself’ with ‘Tell Her You’re Mine’ – both hugely collectable.
Both tunes date from 1965 when Ms. Knight has just re-joined the Pips after a short career break to get married. Both tracks were recorded for Larry Maxwell’s New York label MAXX and collectors will know that ‘Stop And Get A Hold Of Myself’ is a classic Northern stomper, Written by Van McCoy, it’s been a mainstay on the Northern scene for aeons and rightly so! ‘Tell Her You’re Mine’ is a little less well known but it’s a lovely midtempo soul groove showing why Berry Gordy was so keen to sign Gladys and the boys to Motown.
Both tracks have been lovingly remastered to the highest audio quality and come in a lovely but limited vinyl edition of just 500. Musically the release perfectly sums up Ramrock Retro’s slogan… ‘Yesterday’s Sounds Today’ and with releases on Aaron Neville, Al Jarreau, Wilson Pickett, Betty Everett, Ruby Winters, Lionel Hampton, Grady Tate and Minnie Riperton already lined up, it looks like Ramrock Retro is set to become a major player!
