Denver’s KENYA (JOHNSON) has made quite a name for herself this year. Her long player, ‘My Own Skin’ has been one of this year’s most successful indie soul sets… a connoisseurs’ favourite. The singles from the album, in all kinds of remixes, have also been mainstays on the 2015 modern soul scene, finding favour with their quality melding of soul and jazz.
Now just in time for the upcoming seasonal festivities Kenya turns her vocal arts to a classic Christmas song…. ‘Little Drummer Boy’. The song’s never been a favourite here at SOULANDJAZZANDFUNK, at best a dreary military style march! But Kenya quite transforms it… so much so that you’d be hard pressed to recognize it. She turns it a lithe, smooth swayer with an Anita Baker undertow. Maybe the surprise Christmas soul hit?
