The Brother Moves On, the critically acclaimed South African collective led by Shabaka and the Ancestors singer Siyabonga Mthembu, is releasing two new tracks: a remix by Shabaka Hutchings of ‘Ta Tom’, taken from the band’s latest long-player, $/He Who Feeds You…Owns You, and a brand new cut, ‘New Resistance.’ Both tracks are released by Hutchings’ recently established Native Rebel imprint.
The group, which is noted for its socio-political message songs, sang about survival on their 2022 debut album for Native Rebel but on the single ‘New Resistance,’ where Mthembu’s soulful vocal is framed by flutes dancing over township funk rhythms, their theme is defiance.
The Johannesburg group, which was founded as a dance ensemble in 2008, was the third signing to Native Rebel, following in the footsteps of jazz saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael and hip-hop duo CoN&KwAkE.
