Celebrated soul and jazz chanteuse, KANDACE SPRINGS is busy preparing the release of a new album, ‘Run Your Race’ – due April 5th. While we wait, the LP’s title track has just won release to flag up the upcoming album.
‘Run Your Race’ is a gentle but emotional, gospel-flecked tribute to Kandace’s late father Kenneth “Scatt” Springs. Mr. Springs fronted his own R&B band and sang backup for everyone from Garth Brooks to Aretha Franklin. He sadly passed away in 2021. Kandace says: “He was one of my biggest influences growing up, teaching me everything from how to sing, piano, sports and more. He was a track star in college. Some of the records he set still haven’t been broken. Due to health reasons, he spent the last two years of his life in a wheelchair, unable to run. Now he’s finally free to run his race.”
‘Run Your Race’ touches on the painful process of letting go while also holding on to those special yet ordinary things that make a father/daughter relationship unique. Produced by Ms Springs alongside Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, in some ways the song echoes the sentiment of the Luther Vandross classic ‘Dance With My Father’.
