Noted for her silky and caressingly sensuous voice, the super-soulful Australian songstress and pianist ALLYSHA JOY releases ‘David,’ the third single from her eagerly awaited forthcoming album The Making Of Silk. The follow-up to June’s funky ‘Raise Up,’ which came in the wake of the album’s first taster, April’s more meditative ‘Stay,’ ‘David’ is a heartbreakingly raw reflection on what it feels like to be the victim of sexual abuse. The hard-hitting, unflinchingly honest autobiographical track is a courageous and cathartic expression of empowerment that sees Joy confront her abuser as well as grapple openly with the conflicting feelings her situation provoked.
Regarding her harrowing survival story, the singer from Naarm, Melbourne, says: “I think it would be painful for me at this point to not tell the truth – to say explicitly that this is a song about abuse, about multiple experiences of sexual assault. I want others to know that they shouldn’t stay quiet if they are in a situation where they don’t feel safe. I want to be open about these painful complex feelings of shame and confusion that I know other survivors will have experienced in feeling like they can’t speak up or even acknowledge what is happening, what happened. I won’t carry that shame anymore and I want others to know that they’re not alone.”
