JOHNNY CARTER DIES ...

JOHNNY CARTER, lead tenor with the DELLS, died on Friday 21st August – he was 76. CARTER passed away at the Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey Illinois and cause of death was given as lung cancer. Born in 1933, CARTER joined the DELLS in 1960 – replacing JOHNNY FUNCHES. Since then, the line up of the DELLS had remained constant and since CARTER’S diagnosis with cancer last August, the veteran group have refused to perform. By general consent, JOHNNY CARTER truly possessed one of soul’s most distinctive voices and he was one of only a handful of artists to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice. He was honoured not only for his work with the DELLS but also for the role he played with seminal do-wop group the FLAMINGOS. TERRY STEWART CEO of the Hall Of Fame said “We have lost an incredible voice that graced two of the most significant vocal groups of all time”. CARTER is survived by five daughter and several grandchildren
