Premier League boutique soul label IZIPHO have lined up two new 45s for imminent release and the discs present two very different soul shadings.

First up there’s ‘BEAUTIFUL YOU’/ ‘CAN I COME OVER’ from contemporary soul diva LYNN DAVIS. Soul fans will already be familiar with Ms D as these two wonderful recordings made considerable waves on original (digital) release in 2023 and 2022 respectively. On the release of ‘Can I Come over’ in ’22 we learned that Lynn was a  US singer/songwriter/producer who is known, Stateside, as one of the best and most in-demand session singers. She’s graced countless recordings with people like Mick Jagger, The Jackson 5, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Kenny G, Barbara Streisand, Anita Baker, and Whitney Houston and for ten years she  fronted the George Duke Band. Lynn’s also worked on movie soundtracks  with legends like Steven Spielberg, Marvin Hamlisch, Arif Mardin, and Lalo Schifrin.

Back in 2022 Ms D wisely stepped  out on her own with the  soulful single, ‘Can I Come Over’. The tune , which opens with the classic ringing phone gambit, is  a sensual contemporary soul groove. It was followed a year later by ‘Beautiful You’. Every bit as  sensual, many pundits and fans made it one THE BEST singles of that year. For the single the Izipho team have made ‘Beautiful You’ the A side but in truth this one’s a glorious  double A sider! The release is made extra special with a beautiful portrait of Lynn, painted by the uber talented Arjan van Gent and on the back cover is Lynn’s musical biography, documented in full!

The second new Izipho 7” is very, very different. It harks back to Soul’s Golden Age with the offering of ‘EVERY DAY I TRY’/ ‘BABY GIRL’ from MEL DAY backed by the TITO LOPEZ COMBO. Not a lot is known about the testifying Mr Day but he comes one like a “for real”, old school soul contender, even though  these are new recordings! ‘Everyday I Try’ is a southern flavoured meander that recalls  the soulful chest-beating  of dear Joe Tex, while ‘Baby Girl’ is more up tempo but still churchy and authentic. The record is produced and under license from music maestro Harbans Srih and comes in Black Vinyl – 150 copies or Transparent Yellow Vinyl – 150.
