The late TONY STRONG was one of a group of artists who regularly worked with entrepreneur Butch Ingram and his Society Hill Records in a quest to keep the Philly soul flag flying high and Tony’s CV made him perfect for the job. He began in gospel (there’s a surprise!) before working in different incarnations of The Perfections, Blue Magic, The Intrigues, the Ebonys, People’s Choice and the Intruders.
Society Hill issued a number of Tony’s recordings on various compilations but after his sad passing, Butch Ingram decided to issue a whole album on Tony in tribute to a real Philly stalwart and with the blessing of Tony’s family, ‘Philly Style’ is now available.
The ten tracker naturally features plenty of Philadelphia classics…. ‘Me And Mrs Jones’, ‘Backstabbers’, ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’ and ‘United’ amongst them. There are a few non-Philly items too – notably a cover of Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers’ Motown outing ‘Does Your Mama Know About Me’ and a Butch Ingram original ‘If I Could Only Talk To Daddy”
