ABBY JEANNE is a US singer/songwriter who peddles the currently fashionable take on retro soul, as witnessed by her powerful new single, ‘Know Better’.
Impressed by the song, we’ve learned that Milwaukee-born Abby grew up immersed in the sounds of the 60s that were mainstays on the café jukebox where she hung out. Family issues meant she left home at an early age. Her travels evenatully took her to India, where she started to carve out a music career for herself. Now based in NYC, she sees herself as “multimedia artist”, combining her love of music and art.
Right now, though, she’s focused on her music and to that end she’s linked up with production team Eraserhood Sound (Maxwell Perla and Vincent John) who work out of the Philadelphia studio that was previously occupied by Questlove. They specialise in creating what they call “retro-futuristic” music and that’s a good description of Abby Jeanne’s ‘Know Better’.
Recorded straight to analogue tape, there are shades of people like Amy Winehouse for sure but young Abby is always her own woman! She says; “I seek to connect with strangers and people in my everyday life, but find it harder and harder to get others to experience that magic with me in such an isolating, vain, and technology addicted era. It has become the norm to experience more and more of our lives through the internet. We are being entertained constantly and encouraged to interact with these worlds that are flooded with disconnected communication, disinformation, curated illusions, and propaganda. This song is a reminder to myself and others that in this brave new world we live in, we may feel pressured or alienated but at the end of the day we know better. Instead of wallowing or giving in to our corrupted society perhaps we just chose to be alive.”
Abby Jeanne’s ‘Know Better’ single is out now via Eraserhood Sound, with a 7″ vinyl record to follow on April 21st.
