THE AUGUST HEAT BAND hail from the small town of Bristol in Louisiana and at the core of the band are gospel-trained vocalist Eltonez “Cookie” Salton, guitarist John Kent Pierre-Auguste, bassist Ronny Sonnier, drummer Michael “Joe Monk” Caesar and keyboardist Tony Lea.
Back in 2010 the band went into the Lockdown Studio in Lafayette to begin working on an album called ‘Closer’. The recordings were supervised by studio engineer Michael Lockett and while the finishing touches are being completed, UK soul specialist label, Soul Junction has picked up on two cuts which they’ve just released as a vinyl 7″.
The A side is a delicious mid-tempo soul groove called ‘You And Me’. A summer delight (befitting the band’s name), the track boasts a lovely melody and an infectious catchy chorus hook with Ms. Cookie Salton on great form betraying her gospel roots… laid-back soul at its best.
The putative B-side, ‘Hooked On You’, is a touch faster and tougher and its crisp beats might appeal to the modern room crowd. Both cuts prove what real soul collectors know… proper soul music is still being made. Seek and ye shall find… and big thanks to Soul Junction for helping us seeking and finding!
