‘Brothers and Sisters’ is the debut album from LAKUTA, a Brighton-based ensemble whose collective roots run through Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia and mainland Europe. The band’s name translates from the Swahili as ‘to find, meet and share” – a reference to their aim of fusing music styles to create something they’re proud to share with strangers!
The album was prefaced by the single ‘Bata Boy’ – a hugely percussive piece that won favour from tastemakers like Laurent Garnier, and Felix Buxton from Basement Jaxx. The ten tracker is stuffed with plenty more of those infectious rhythm tracks, though the soul highlight is the funky, brassy workout that is ‘Lose Yourself’. It’s a pulsating tune that allows vocalist Siggi to show her soul credentials.
BROTHERS AND SISTERS by Lakuta is released on Tru Thoughts on 12th August.
