By common consent one of last year’s best proper soul albums was ‘Look Up!’ from The Harlem Gospel Travelers. Amongst the many highlights (especially for died the wool, 60s soul collectors ) was ‘Help Me To Understand’ (shades of the Impressions’ ‘Lord I Gotta Keep On Moving’). You probably know the Travelers’ song was written and produced by Eli “Paperboy” Reed… good soul guarantee.
If you want more of the tune, Colemine have just issued it as a single in a new “acoustic” version. It’s a tad slower and has been extended by some 30 seconds and with the frail falsetto of Aaron Frazer helping the Travelers out, it’s a real retro delight. Proper soul music for real soul collectors.
