CANDACE WOODSON is a southern soul singer who came to the business via the tried and tested gospel route debuting in churches in her Paducah, Kentucky home.
A music graduate of the Tennessee State University in Nashville, we first heard of Candace back in 2015 when she released a classy and insistent mid-tempo modern soul groove called ‘Free’. It wasn’t the Deneice Williams’ classic – Candace’s ‘Free’ was tougher and grittier with some pulsing brass notes and, we’re told, that the lyric really is intensely personal. Yes, we all want to be free to be ourselves but Candace had, thankfully, just been given the all clear from a life threatening cancer…. she truly is “free”.
We were also told that the single heralded an imminent album but instead of a long player we were treated to some fab Tom Glide mixes of ‘Free’. However, it seems that the album is almost good to go and to whet appetites for the soul it promises, Ms W has just released a lovely tune from the set. ‘My Heart’ is a gentle offering that will appeal to the more discerning… soul music rather than sole music! It augers well for the album.
