UK Soul Man, DON-E (Donald George McLean) has been making his music for 30 years now – and what better way to celebrate than by releasing an album… and what better title for it than ’30’? The 14 tracker’s just been released and it’s a concise definition of the current state of UK soul – it shows that what our US cousins do, we can do just as capably!
The album, as is the usual way, was flagged up by a series of singles – ‘So Sensational’ and ‘Digah D Bump’ (that last one also came in a trio of well-received mixes). Those tunes summed up the overall feel and flavour of ‘30’- contemporary Brit soul of the highest order.
Such is Don’s standing in the UK soul world that he can call on some top names to help him deliver his ideas. So, here, on the beaty, bassy ‘I Got You’, Carl McIntosh of Loose lends a hand while ever reliable Omar helps Don out on the crisp dancer that is ‘Out Here!’
Tracks winning DJ plays at the moment seem to be ‘Good Clothes On’ and ‘Turn Around’ which we’ve seen on several soul tastemakers’ playlists.
Oddity (though maybe that’s not the right word) on the album is a cover of Johnny Guitar Watson’s ‘A Real Mutha For Ya’… bit of an obscure choice but Mr Mc does a great job!
