Out of Philadelphia, ANGELO OUTLAW describes himself as “a deeply cosmic, master mallet percussionist and a thoughtful poet.” He adds that he’s “an artist whose creativity knows no bounds”.
You can check out those claims via his debut album, ‘Axis Of Time’; which has just been released via Philly label, Eraserhood Sound. It’s an 11 tracker on which Mr O displays his mastery of the vibraphone and marimba.
The album was flagged up by a 7” single ‘Time Traveler’ / ‘Silent Horizon’ and as the titles hint they delivered a contemporary take on cosmic soul-jazz. Those tracks anchor the album with other focus cuts being ‘Speed Of Light’ and a lovely, funky/jazzy/soulful ‘Free My Mind ’which delivers a vocal.
According to Angelo the album is meant to transport the listener to a dream-like state, where space and time slowly fade away and reality is merely a distant memory. If that’s your thing, then you may well want to investigate. More prosaically I’d describe the music as a sort of a 21st century cocktail of Roy Ayers and Dexter Wansel with a dash of Donald Byrd! Certainly the track ‘Free My Mind’ comes with a SJF recommendation!
