GOING FOR GOLD!

Aussie soulstress CHELSEA WILSON made some big waves with her 2015 long player, ‘I Hope You’ll Be Very Unhappy Without Me’. In fact, in the land of Oz the 11 tracker was voted “Best Soul/Funk Album Of The Year” at the Victoria Music Awards.

It’s taken a while but Ms W is all set to release the follow up –a concise 9 tracker ‘Chasing Gold’. The long player was heralded last November with the single, ‘Real Love’….. NO not that ‘Real Love’! – rather a sweet modern, danceable groove that veers towards the poppier end of the soul spectrum. And if that’s your thing you’ll find lots more of the same on the album which hits the sales racks on March 22nd. ‘Nothing Can Come Between This Love Tonight’ is probably the best example of that cute, pop/soul soundscape on this album.

However, at the end of the album (the last three tracks to be precise) things get a little more serious and soulful. The end sequence kicks off with ‘Breaking Down’ (a kind of ‘Backstabbers’ vibe here); then there’s ‘Take Back The Night’ (which reminds me of an old Luther Vandross tune) and finally the jazzy ‘I Won’t Choose You’ (a big, full production) three great cuts!

Throughout the album Ross McHenry’s production is clever and lavish (some great strings input from Ross Irwin of Bamboos fame).

Chelsea Wilson’s ‘Chasing Gold’ is released on March 22nd on her own label (House of Valerie and Joan – named for her two grandmothers),
