Back in 2018 Aussie all round soul muso LANCE FERGUSON launched his ambitious RARE GROVE SPECTRUM. The project’s aim was/is to dig out some ultra-rare and classic soul and funk tunes and re-record them with a 21st century Aussie twist. It was a huge success and, big surprise, Mr F is gearing up to issue a second collection of Rare Grooves.
As an appetiser, he’s just released the first single – his take on ‘Far Beyond’ originally recorded in 2004 by Dave Lee’s Sunburst Band who heavily sampled Ahmad Jamal’s ‘Swahililand’.
This new Rare Groove Spectrum version features a heavy go-go style rhythm section with a tight, almost funky undertow. Female voices (uncredited on my copy) add to the attraction… sweet, jazzy piano too!
