Been a while since we had any new music from GEORGE BENSON. Indeed we believe that the guitar maestro has not been in the best of health, forcing him to cancel his upcoming UK tour. So it’s good to know that there’s a new release on him. However, the release isn’t totally “new”.
It seems that a while back (no specific date given but we believe that it was the 80s), at the behest of Quincy Jones, George recorded an album of pop and songbook standards in London with an 87 piece orchestra led by Robert Farnon. After some editing and post production, for reasons never explained, the recordings were put aside and never released. The tapes stayed, forgotten, in a New York warehouse for decades…until now.
With the full agreement of Mr B, Warner Bros are releasing the album – it’s due May 14th. In the meantime, the first single is good to go. It’s a jazzy, big band version of Paul Mauriat’s ‘Love Is Blue’. Soul fans, of course, revere the Dells’ blistering version.
George’s cover is totally different to both and, of course, in the 80s our man at the top of of his game! Like we said, it’s good to go now. The album, ‘Dreams Do Come True’ due May 14th – full review here very soon!
