Don’t know about you but I’ve always felt that the good ‘ole Duke of Earl, GENE CHANDLER is sadly underrated. The Chicago soul man was a consistent hit maker through the 60s and 70s and he possesses one of the most distinctive voices in the whole of soul.
In the late 70s Chandler scored a hit with the ultra-catchy ‘Does She Have A Friend For Me’ and now, without too much of a fanfare, the song is back with us in a new mix courtesy of MARTIN SHAW.
Shaw is known for taking classic, old school songs and reimagining them while maintaining the integrity of the original. Here he adds a cool steppers style beat to the familiar song and develops it over a luscious 6 and a half minutes. It’s a respectful and tasteful re-working of a lovely song and hopefully it might bring Gene Chandler to a newer, more contemporary audience.
It’s available now via Bandcamp.
