MARK BICKNELL’S BIG MAN RECORDS continue their wonderful exploration of veteran band, THE EMBERS back catalogue with a new 45 that pairs ‘First Time’ with ‘I Wanna Be (Your Everything)’. The release is the logical follow up to Big Man’s last 7” which paired the beach music group’s ‘Just ‘Crazy ‘Bout You Baby’ with a version of the Jerry Butler/Curtis Mayfield song ‘Aware Of Love’.
The A side of the new 7” has long been a big Northern tune – easy to hear why. Light and optimistic, ‘First Time’ ticks all the right boxes. Many will recognize the B side – a cover of the Manhattans Carnival recording, ‘I Wanna Be (Your Everything)’. Here the Embers put their unique harmonic spin on the song. … a real treat for collectors/lovers of classic soul in general and devotees of Carolina-style beach music in particular.
