Chicano/Low Rider soul continues to grow in popularity and why not? The sound is soothing and always soulful and one of the tunes currently winning plenty of scene plays is ‘No Time Like Now’ from JOAQUIN AND THE GLOWLINERS – a band that hails from San Antonio and Texas steeped in Chicano heritage.
‘No Time Like Now’ is a simple affair – but none the less effective for that. It opens with a four-part harmony piece with an old school bass line and a classic lowrider soul tempo. What more do romantics want? Well maybe some romantic lyrics. Of the song, Joaquin recalls, “I was inspired to write this song when our bandmate Amanda announced she was going to get married. We all jumped for joy and that night I went home and had a dream about this song. I woke up in the middle of the night and recorded what I dreamt into my voice memo app. At the next rehearsal, I presented the concept to the band, and we wrote the lyrics together” . Thus Amanda is featured in the second verse where she sings alongside Joaquin, evoking the heartfelt union of a couple exchanging vows, ideal for newlyweds of any age. Sweet!
FYI, the band comprise vocalists Amanda Joy Urdiales and Sarah Rocha-Barz alongside Joaquin Muerte with Felipe Iruegas on guitar, Luis Gonzalez on bass, Jacob “Jknodic” Benavides on drums and Chris “Kra” Malacara on Keys.
