Nigerian-born singer NNENKA is one of Africa’s leading new singers. Over here she’s best known for the fact that Rita Ora sampled her 2008 hit ‘Heartbeat’ on her ‘R.I.P.’ but music tastemakers are predicting that her new long player ‘My Fairy Tales’ will make her a “name” in her own right.
The first single from the album is the lilting, reggae flavoured ‘My Love My Love’ but the 9 tracker tackles issues tougher that romance lost and found. ‘Believe System’, for instance, talks of the need to connect with your roots while ‘Babylon’ tells of the regional plight of West Africa.
Nnenka has already worked with people like Massive Attack, Lenny Kravitz and Ziggy Markley and she’ll be touring Europe in the spring.
