Those who hark back to the great soul jazz days of people like Ramsey Lewis, Young-Holt, Ray Bryant, Charlie Palmieri, et al were delighted last year by an album from the aptly named THE LEWIS EXPRESS…. George Cooper, Piano; Neil Innes, Bass; Sam Hobbs, Drums; and Pete Williams, Percussion. The eponymous long player really did hit the right soul jazz chord (as their name implies).
The band have just issued two new tunes as a single (the precursor to a new album?). They are the very ‘Hang On Sloopy’ flavoured ‘Clap Your Hands’ and the dance floor friendly ‘Stomp Your Feet’. Both are classic slabs of mod jazz boogaloo and will take you right back to the famous Bohemian Caverns.
