Seems to be the season for cover versions. Over the last week or so we’ve enjoyed several new takes on bona fide soul classics and they keep on coming.
Latest classic to be given a makeover is the Emotions’ ‘So I Can Love You’ – one of the many great tunes they cut at Stax /Volt. Now the song is back with us via FILLIES FINAZZ – a glamourous foursome consisting of Lorna Young, sisters Alicia and Denise Amaro, and Sandra Gail Brown. The girls all come from a Philadelphia Gospel background and now record for Society Hill.
We’ve been told that the girls are putting the finishing touches to an album, ‘Singing For Tomorrow’ and that that their version of ‘So I Can Love You’ will be the LP’s opener. The “Fillies” offer a different take on the familiar – it’s a little rougher round the edges and features spoken passages with the speaking voice sounding a lot like Dionne Warwick. Always a good tune – soul collectors will find it intriguing! Out now.
