Proper soul collectors will know a little something about US soul vet, MICHAEL B SUTTON. He’s probably best known for his behind the scenes work at Motown. After joining the Gordy empire Michael worked as writer/producer with people like the Originals, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Dennis Edwards.
Then in the early noughties he reinvented himself a s a solo artist, releasing the acclaimed album, ‘Hopeless Romantic’. Our man’s enjoyed something of a comeback in the last few years, releasing a couple of decent singles – ‘Band Aid For A Broken Heart’ and ‘Sexual’ .
Mr. S’s latest single is winning plenty of plaudits Stateside. It’s an easy on the ear, slow-burning soul groove, ‘Early Mornin Lovin’’.
There’s a definite Marvin Gaye vibe going down here and though we don’t think Michael ever worked with MPG, he was always a big, big fan of the man. He says: “Working at Motown in the 70s was like stepping into the heart of soul music, and meeting legends like Marvin Gaye was surreal. Marvin had this incredible energy—smooth, intense, and full of life—and it’s something I’ve carried with me ever since. With ‘Early Morning Lovin’,’ I wanted to capture that same timeless groove, something that makes you feel every beat, just like Marvin did.”
