Iconic label Blue Note gets into its 2016 stride with the release of a new album by Hammond maestro DR LONNIE SMITH. The 7 tracker is called ‘Evolution’ and is the organist’s first set for the label since 1970!
Special guests on the album include pianist Robert Glasper (who’s featured on the opener, ‘Play It Back’) and sax man Joe Lovano (he’s on ‘Afrodesia’ and ‘For Heaven’s Sake’).
The long player’s big set piece is a cover of ‘My Favourite Things’ and as you’d imagine Smith quite transforms ‘The Sound Of Music’ song. The set’s other cover is a version of Theolonius Monk’s ‘Straight No Chaser’.
