One of the year’s best singles has been ‘No More Tears In Your Eyes’ from MASTA EDWARDS. When this simple but effective old school shuffle was released back in January we knew very little about Masta. Our sleuths revealed that he hailed from Suffolk, Virginia but as child his family moved to New York’ He then pitched up in Los Angeles where he’s worked in the music biz for almost 40 years. He’s worked as a lead vocalist, songwriter, band leader, mentor, motivator and teacher and collaborated with people like Norman Brown, Don Covay, Seal, Scott Henderson, Thelma Houston, Mandrill, Keb Mo, Preston Glass and LTD just to name a few. For the last few years he’s been part of veteran vocal group the Sly, Slick, & Wicked.
Quite a CV, so, little wonder that his own solo career is often on the old back burner. But we’re pleased to report, that in his own right Masta has just released a new single – ‘Don’t Walk Away’. It’s a new song written by Jay Blacky and the production’s down to ConFunkShun’s Felton Pilate, so you know that we’re talking real soul quality.
‘Don’t Walk Away’ is a tougher, crunchier cut than the sweet No More Tears In Your Eyes’ but there’s plenty to please – notably Masta’s gritty, world weary, old school soul man vocal. Little wonder he’s often billed as Masta “Edge Of Soul” Edwards. It’s out now via Uni-Global.
