Sadly these days too many rappers are happy to conform to the stereotype. One who most certainly doesn’t is the London-based CHIMA ANYA. You see, as far as I know, CHIMA is the only rap artist who has a parallel career as a doctor of medicine!
The Glasgow-raised CHIMA made his solo recording debut in 2010 with ‘New Day’, setting down his marker as a powerful newcomer. Since then, he’s completed his studies at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital and is now a fully qualified GP. But soul, jazz and above all else hip-hop still exerts a powerful influence – hence his second album – ‘The Doctor’s Note’. On the 11 tracker Dr ANYA offers a surgery-load of opinions, observations and social comment – delivered in a laid-back almost jazzy manner that will recall the best of dear old GURU.
Soul people might like to check out ‘Guess I’ll Never’ which samples LOVE UNLIMITED’S ‘Walkin’ In The Rain With The One I Love’ or ‘Still Here’ complete with catchy riff that might have been lifted from STEVIE WONDER’S ‘Lately’.
