DISNEY JAZZ?

alt

If you never thought you’d see the word “Disney” and “Jazz” in the same context than prepare to be surprised as Verve/Decca release an intriguing 12 track compilation featuring a selection of top jazzers warbling and playing their way through a selection of Disney-originated songs.

Biggest name on the album is Gregory Porter who offers his treatment of ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’. It’s classically Porter and if my memory serves me well, I remember it being used in last year’s M&S TV ad.

Album highlight for me though is a French language version of ‘One Day My Prince Will Come’ from Nikki Yanofsky. The treatment has just the right level of soulful desperation and features a sensitive piano and sweet, sweet strings.

Elsewhere you can enjoy people like Jamie Cullum, Melody Gardot, Anne Sila and Stacey Kent offering interpretations of songs like ‘Everybody Wants To Be A Cat’, ‘He’s A Tramp’, ‘Let It Go’ (not again!) and ‘Bibbidi Bobbodo Boo’
