We’ve been tracking the career of London-based blue-eyed soul man DANNY TOEMAN since way back in 2014 when he impressed with his double A sided single – ‘That Sinking Feeling’/’Layin’ It On The Line’. Since then our Dan’s released plenty of quality blue-eyed soul and just this summer he’s been supporting Chaka Khan and touring with Eli “Paperboy” Reed!
Thus with freshly flexed muscles, the self-proclaimed “King of North London Soul” has just released a new single – ‘Thursday’s Child’ which is putatively paired with ‘How Do You Keep on Smiling’. The former is an uptown soul shuffle with an undertow of funk and grit à la Bobby Womack. The song’s all about the tension between taking the easy road in life and staying true to oneself, the quest for redemption, and the need to remain authentic in a world of shortcuts. Now you know! The production’s big and it’s one of Danny’s best.
That digital B side, ‘How Do You Keep On Smiling’ is likewise both soulful and funky and it shows Danny’ vocal dexterity. There’s a nice ending to this one too. Both cuts are good for streaming/downloading right now.
